Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) Archive

Q:
DRG Codes - Why do we get an error when testing with the NYS Medicaid DRG codes?
A:

Testing with NYS Diagnosis Related Codes will cause an error such as Value of sub-element is incorrect.   Expected value is from external code list Diagnosis Related Group (229) .

Diagnosis Related Group (DRG) codes are a national standard used in HIPAA-regulated transactions and therefore when DRG information is sent the mandated standard DRG codes must be used.

The New York State Medicaid DRG codes are local codes and, under HIPAA, may no longer be submitted.   Note that NYSDOH does not require the Health Information segment that contains DRG codes (HI*DR) segment.  However, if this segment is sent it must be in compliant form.

Any DRG code must be from External Code List 229.   In the production environment NYSDOH will assign NYS DRG values during processing.
