Q:    Invalid Character errors - How can we clear these up?
A:   

For X12 transactions, please refer to Appendix A, Section 1.2.2 of your Implementation Guide (available at www.wpc-edi.com/hipaa) for a listing of the Basic Character Set that is acceptable for use in the HIPAA X12 electronic transactions.

The Basic Character Set does not include the lower-case letters.  However NYSDOH will not reject a transmission that contains lower-case characters.
