Q:
Newborn Hearing Screening? How should we bill for this service?
A:

Newborn hearing screenings must be billed on the 837 Institutional.

When processing a claim the NYS Medicaid system assigns an internal Category of Service. In order to receive the correct value a Newborn Hearing Screening must be billed with a Type of Bill of 13, Hospital Outpatient; or a Clinic Type of Bill of 71-73, 75, or 77-79 . A procedure code must be sent in SV202-2. It is permissible to use V5008, Hearing Screening. The Rate Code for Newborn Hearing Screening, Initial is 3138; Newborn Hearing Screening, Follow-up is 3139. A Revenue Code in the 051X range is also required.
