| Q: |
How do I enter an out-of-state license number in the ordering provider field? |
|
| A: |
Choose the appropriate 2-digit profession code from the list in the MEVS Provider Manual and add a zero at the left. After entering the profession code, enter the appropriate 2-character state code followed by six digits of the license number. If the license number is longer than six digits send the leftmost six digits. If shorter than six digits, zero-fill to the left. The resulting identifier must be eleven characters long.
After the eMedNY NPI implementation of September 1, 2008, a license number can only be used:
- In a non-healthcare (non-HIPAA regulated) transaction, or
- To identify an Atypical Provider, or
- To identify the referring provider, if the NPI is not known. However the referring provider should be contacted to obtain their NPI.
